THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

Welcome to our parish website!
It is December, ‘the month of months,‘ the most wonderful time of the year, ; as we sing. We see heavy traffic. Everybody is busy. People are nervous. There are holiday cards to send, gifts to purchase, special foods to prepare, and decorations to be done. It is very easy to get caught up in this fever and to forget what is essential to celebrate Christmas.

It seems to me that John the Baptist breaks in on purpose on this second weekend of Advent to remind us of what is truly worth it. The Church calls John the Precursor because he was the one to open the door to Jesus and to introduce him to his mission of salvation. John’s life was fueled by one burning passion: to point others not to himself but to Jesus and to the coming of his kingdom. John does not invite us to be clothed like him and to follow his diet. But he does invite us to live the right way to welcome the era of the ‘New Coming of Jesus’. John the Baptist invites us to go to what is essential in our lives that we may not miss the boat, the encounter with our Lord. For, the essential is not what we eat, what we wear, or what we possess. Christmas is not only about shopping or carols or decorations. Christmas is first about our readiness to welcome the One who is coming. It is about our love for God and our neighbor and the way to live it more concretely today. Christmas is about nourishing our spiritual and inner life. For, not only does the Lord come to be close to us, but he wants to be our ‘Emmanuel’ 'God with us’ and in us that we may not be alone on the way. As we prepare to make everything new and beautiful to celebrate Christmas, may we also prepare a place in our hearts for Jesus so that we may joyfully welcome and proclaim the ‘reason for the season’!

Have a good week and a good Advent season!
Sundown on Holy Thursday to sundown on Easter Sunday is considered the most solemn part of the liturgical year. This three-day period is referred to as the Easter Triduum, also known as the Sacred Triduum, or Paschal Triduum.

           Basically, the Sacred Triduum is one great festival recounting the last three days of Jesus' life on earth, the events of his Passion and Resurrection, when the Lamb of God laid down his life in atonement for our sins.

           By Baptism, we become members of the Church, the Body of Christ.

           The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters. . . . Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was totally faithful to the will of his Father and free from sin. However, he wanted to show his solidarity with human beings in order to reconcile them with the Father. By commanding his disciples to baptize all nations, he established the means by which people would die to sin – Original and actual – and begin to live a new life with God.

           In Baptism, the Holy Spirit moves us to answer Christ's call to holiness. In Baptism, we are asked to walk by the light of Christ and to trust in his wisdom. We are invited to submit our hearts to Christ with ever-deeper love.

           FROM THE PASTOR’ DESK - PUTTING OIL IN OUR LAMPS

           Welcome to our updated parish website!

           This year again, All Saints and All Souls’ celebrations attracted many parishioners. They did not forget that All Saints Day is still a Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. All Souls’ celebration has always been a celebration of healing and fervent prayers. The 7pm mass was well attended as if it were a 1pm Sunday mass. The ceremony of the lights during the mass was particularly moving and beautiful. I thank and congratulate everyone for their presence and active participation as we continue to move forward to a better experience of parish liturgy.

           In this weekend’s parable ten virgins were expecting the bridegroom’s return. Five of them, called foolish, came with no oil in their lamps; the other five brought with them some flasks of oil. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. The gospel does not say that the foolish virgins fell asleep while the wise virgins were vigilant but ‘they all fell asleep.’ Therefore, what made the other five so wise was they brought oil for their lamps. We, Christ’s disciples, expecting our master’s return, we often fall asleep like those ten virgins. Although baptized Christians, we are still living our weakness and sinfulness. As St Paul explains, we want but we can’t. We are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. And yet our life is not that inspiring. We all are sleepers on the way. We need help and healing like everyone. But our greatest wisdom is that we come to the right place to get it. Pope Francis likes to compare the Church to a true hospital where Christ, the greatest Physician ever takes great pleasure in touching, healing, and saving us. As we live in Christ’s discipleship, praying and spreading the love, we put oil in our lamps and let God’s strength overcome our failings.
And the white robed martyrs follow;

            Holy Spirit, Three we name Thee;
While in essence only One,
Undivided God we claim Thee;
And adoring bend the knee,
While we own the mystery.

            Thou art King of glory, Christ:
Son of God, yet born of Mary;
For us sinners sacrificed,
And to death a Tributary:
First to break the bars of death,
Thou hast opened Heaven to faith.

            From Thy high celestial home,
Judge of all, again returning,
We believe that Thou shalt come
In the dreaded doomsday morning;
When Thy voice shall shake the earth,
And the startled dead come forth.

            Therefore do we pray Thee, Lord:
Help Thy servants whom, redeeming
By Thy Precious Blood out-poured,
Thou hast saved from Satan's scheming.
Give to them eternal rest
In the glory of the blest.

            Spare Thy people, Lord, we pray,
By a thousand snares surrounded:
Keep us without sin today,
Never let us be confounded.
Lo, I put my trust in Thee;
Never, Lord, abandon me.

           Have I kept any of my gifts hidden for a long time? How might God’s care shine through them if brought out into the light to share with others?

           There once was a woman who had been gifted throughout her life with lovely jewelry. Some pieces were family heirlooms. Some of the jewelry came as gifts to mark special occasions. Other pieces she had purchased for herself on her travels. She owned pearls from Japan and glass beads from Venice, silver from Spain and emeralds from Colombia. She had necklaces and brooches, bracelets and earrings and rings.

           But as she aged, the woman wore less jewelry. She kept her jewels locked in a safe-deposit box. One day, while at the bank to stash a document in her lockbox, the woman opened the velvet pouches and examined her jewelry.

           In her, something shifted. The woman realized that in the dark metal box at the bank, the precious stones did not catch the light and send it winking into the world. Nobody delighted in looking upon those hidden gems — bits of God’s wondrous creation. In the pitch dark of the vault, the precious metals did not gleam in the sunlight or catch the moonlight rays.

           The woman removed the jewelry from the lockbox and took it home with her. When her granddaughter graduated from high school, she gave the young woman her emerald earrings. When a niece was married, she gifted the bride with something blue: her sapphire bracelet. Little pleased the woman more than seeing her grandmother’s gold locket adorning her daughter’s neck. And the pearls that the lady hadn’t worn in years — the same necklace locked in the dark vault for years — was worn daily with enormous joy by a dear friend who had never had a trove of her own.

           The Catholic steward does not hoard his or her treasures. The steward understands that when we hide our precious gifts, we prevent them from taking their rightful place in the Kingdom.

           Jesus continues his teaching about the coming of the Son of Man. The parable of the talents is specifically concerned with the judgment, the moment the master returns to find that two of his servants have invested and doubled all he gave them while the third did nothing. So, it is in the preparation for Jesus’ return. The preparation must be constant, intense and full of fruitful action.

           “Mercy always appeals to the goodness of each person, even though it be dormant and numbed. Far from bringing destruction, as we so often desire or want to bring about ourselves, mercy seeks to transform each situation from within. Herein lies the mystery of divine mercy. It seeks and invites us to conversion, it invites us to repentance; it invites us to see the damage being done at every level. Mercy always pierces evil in order to transform it.” — Pope Francis

Take a few minutes to rest in the mystery of divine mercy and allow God’s mercy to well up within you then flow through you in addressing damage in your corner of the world.

Holy family meal

           The Mass is a unique and marvelous sacrifice. It is the mystical reality in which Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is renewed. The Mass is also a sacred banquet where together as the Church family we fulfill Jesus’ command at the Last Supper to “Do this in memory of me.”

           In many ways, the liturgy is similar to (but certainly more than) a family meal.

            It may help children to think about Mass as a “holy meal.”

           Before we sit down to eat together as a family, we usually wash up and get ready. That is similar to what we do when we enter the church and bless ourselves with holy water. The holy water is a reminder of our baptism in which we were “washed clean” of sin in order to be able to share the Eucharist.

           As families gather around the table, we hear about the important news of the day. We do the same thing at Mass when we listen to the readings, especially the Gospel (the Good News), and say the opening prayers. This helps us prepare our hearts for the rest of the Eucharistic meal.

           In most homes, dinnertime is a time to talk as a family, to bring up issues that are important to the family as a whole. In some ways, this is what the priest is doing when he preaches the homily. He discusses aspects of our faith life and provides practical applications for living our beliefs after we leave the table of the Lord.

           Of course, without food there would be no dinner, and without bread and wine there would be no Eucharist, so at Mass we bring up the sacred gifts to the altar just as we bring the food from the kitchen to the dining room table.

           Before our family starts to eat, we say grace. Praying the Lord’s Prayer and extending the kiss of peace is our Church’s family’s grace, a way to connect and be present to each other. Jesus commanded us to “take and eat.” During Communion, we, as an entire Church family, do that when we share the Body and Blood of Christ. We all eat the same food and the same drink, in the same way as families do at home, only this food and drink, instead of merely nourishing the body, provides nourishment for our souls. We receive the real and true presence of the risen Jesus in the Eucharist, and we look to our eternal life with Christ at the heavenly banquet.

           Finally, once our family dinner is complete, each of us leave to go about our separate activities. At Mass, the same thing occurs after the dismissal and final blessing, when we “go forth” to “announce the Gospel of the Lord.”

           When we look at Mass as sharing a holy meal with our beloved brother Jesus and the rest of our Church family, we can come to understand that it is truly “in the breaking of the bread that we come to know him.”
